Harold Godwinson, also known as Harold II, ruled as the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. He was born around 1022 to one of the most powerful noble families in England. Godwinson's rise to power was swift, as he succeeded Edward the Confessor in January 1066, following the King's death. His reign, however, was short-lived and marked by turmoil.

Godwinson faced external threats almost immediately, with invasions by Harald Hardrada of Norway and William the Conqueror of Normandy. In the Battle of Stamford Bridge in September 1066, Harold defeated Hardrada but was unable to savor the victory. Soon after, William invaded England and decisively defeated Godwinson's forces at the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066. This clash sealed Harold's fate, as he died during the battle, traditionally believed to have been struck in the eye by an arrow.
